Congratulations to Vasu, who lost 10% (16.2 lbs) of his total bodyweight since starting a 7 week weight loss challenge that I ran. Vasu did it on a largely vegetarian Indian food nutrition plan. And while that may not sound like a big deal to many online readers, it apparently is, as comments like “desi food and weight loss” don’t work together, or “how can anyone lose weight on an Indian food diet” are things I hear fairly often from my Indian clients.
Of course, anyone can shed fat using the foods, spices, and seasoning they love to eat, and are accustomed to. So, how did Vasu do it?
Sumi: So everyone wants to know what you ate. Share with us!
Vasu:
Morning: Egg white omelet with with Spinach, Veggies, and Onions
Lunch: 1 baked potato with Chili powder and salt, 1 Corn on the Cob
Evening Snacks: Vegetable Salad with an apple/fruit
Dinner: Egg white omelet with with Spinach, Veggies, and Onions
Prebedtime snack: Whey Protein Shake
Sumi: So, what made you decide to get started with personal training
and diet coaching? Why not just do the weight loss challenge on your
own?
and diet coaching? Why not just do the weight loss challenge on your
own?
Vasu: To get body flexibility along with improving my eating habits and change my lifestyle.
Sumi: What do you love most about strength training?
Vasu: Of course I love every part of it. There is not even one thing that I don’t 🙂
Sumi: Did you find that shedding belly fat is harder because you have
to (largely) follow an Indian vegetarian diet?
Vasu: Not really, in fact I found it very interesting that even by following vegetarian diet we can shed the belly fat!
Sumi: What was the biggest change or adjustment you had to make?
Vasu: Cutting down on eating rice, going to gym, and personal training 😛
Sumi: Do you have any tips for Indian men?
Vasu: Even by following an Indian Vegetarian diet we can shed the fat and there are plenty of choices to choose from.
Sumi: Any tips for the vegetarians?
Vasu: You might have heard that with an vegetarian diet you cannot lose fat, and it’s wrong. If you have the dedication to do it, go for it!

This is a great story. My concern is, since no one can stay on a diet plan forever, as soon as you are off the plan, you might just go back to old habits and get back all the fat that was lost. Unless someone develops weight training as hobby or profession, how can one stay on track?
